OccupyOrr
We had two speakers at today’s meeting that guided the discussion and got us thinking about what changes we want made and how we’re going to make it happen. We are very grateful to Ms. Ana Mercado, a youth organization guidance professional and Mr. Cee from City Year.
At today’s meeting we discussed:
v How we plan to expand OccupyOrr
v Let others know who we are and what we’re about
v Issues in our school and community
v Solutions to make a better environment for everyone
v Other youth organizations like us:
o High Hopes Coalition
o Blocks Together Youth Organization
We all brainstormed and contributed to the topics that were put before us. Everyone brought forth copious ideas, serious issues, and great solutions.
v Issues in the community and school:
o Violence
o Teen pregnancy
o Lack of communication
o Peers being ostracized
v Solutions to make a better community and school:
o Starting more programs to keep teens involved and out of trouble
o Safe spaces- where conflicts are talked about, solved, and never brought up again
o Reaching out to others in an efficient way like:
§ Freshman-Senior Mentorship
§ Brother- Sister Associations
v What we would like to change:
o Relaxed uniform (reasonable uniforms)
o More out of uniform days
Expanding OccupyOrr has already been put into effect. Today one of our members, Sean Harris shared that he heard our organization [OccupyOrr] mentioned on the radio station 101.9. We are always open to ways we can get people to know who we are and what we’re about.
